Between Darkness and Light
The first time I made a mark on paper with a stick of charcoal, the feeling of awe found me!
It's so soft! And I can blend it to reveal many shades of black and grey, and white when we count the paper colour too.
Over the years of working with charcoal, I have had the honour of beholding its capacity to evoke many intuitive discoveries in me. Some calming; some joyous, and many confronting me to feel.
Of all the times, I have sketched with charcoal, the arts in April are still tricky for me - possibly because it's Easter season and the black marks on my paper calls to me to surrender something.
Conditioning of the 'given' ideals of the past that need to loosen find closure, with the dead substance of charcoal. The process between darkness and light is the key.
Through my art-making, the feeling of resurrection (after the death of letting go), becomes possible - that graces inner soul transformation and therefore times of wellbeing and inner soul health.
