Pregnant Yoga Class

Nayna - a naturally sensitive pregnant woman, London

I felt so relaxed and centred doing the four calming Eurythmy gestures for pregnant women. To my surprise, I went on to birth my baby in a natural way.

The nurses stood around my bed in awe of my strength to say No to their many generous offers of pain-relief interventions.

I knew that what my baby needed from me.

I knew I could trust my own intuition and my senses.

Thank you.

Eurythmy and Singing Workshops for Pregnant Women, and Friends

“If we try either through sculpture, painting, or drama — indeed, through any art — to portray a human being,

we endeavour to create a figure that is sufficient and complete in itself — one that contains a whole world”.

~Rudolf Steiner

Eurythmy is a form of gentle movement that Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) developed with Lory Maier-Smits, Marie Steiner-von Sievers and other pioneers.

The word ‘eurythmy’ consists of the prefix "Eu," the Greek term for all-encompassing beauty, the essence of the human, and the word "rhythm," which stands for the creative interaction of polarities.

In eurythmy the movements correspond to individual letters of the alphabet. You can use them to express characteristic sounds, tones and moods, even entire words. The sounds of the alphabet which are expressed in gesture and movement through the art of eurythmy, are a systematic expression of the interplay of our inner forces.

Depending on how you consciously accompany these movements and experience them internally, you can activate your inner resources and discover new possibilities of expression and use the sequence and gestures for your well-being.

Whether you are someone looking to discover peace through your sensitivities, or someone who would like to understand a loved ones sensitivities, I have come to trust that high sensitivity is a Higher Potential of the Self. It’s a way to come to the feeling and knowing of wholeness and balance. In discovering the beauty of sensitivity, we can arrive at an orientation towards creative health.

Through the arts-based work, one can utilise the self-care tools to steadily discern the strengths inherent in the sensitivity which can help our relationships and our individuality to thrive.

What makes a person highly sensitive depends on a variety of factors such as evolution, environment, and developmental experiences.

  • Sensitivity can be defined as the ability to perceive, process, and respond deeply to ones self and ones environment.

  • Being sensitive and insensitive are possibilities between which you may discover a feeling of arriving at ones self.

  • The word "responsive" in one senses rather than overwhelmed or stuck, may also describe the value of sensitivity in balance.

Sensitivity can be defined as the ability to perceive, process, and respond deeply to one’s environment.

This ability happens at two levels:

(1) perceiving information from the senses and

(2) thinking about that information thoroughly or finding many connections between it and other memories, knowledge, or ideas.

Sensitivity is a normal part of Life. All human beings, animals, and plants are sensitive to their environment to some degree. Sensitive people may take in more information from their environment, process it more deeply, and are ultimately shaped by it. Much of this deep processing happens unconsciously, and many sensitive people aren’t even aware that they do it. This process applies to everything a sensitive person takes in.

So how do we find ground in the sensory impressions that may come towards us, in our sensitivity?

Eurythmy movements invite an active and engaged approach to the world in which we find ourselves, as we continue to learn to grow towards agape love, alongside each other.

Some of the benefits of practicing the simple and gentle movements :

  • Discovering a rich inner life

  • A higher capacity for empathy

  • Mastering challenges around organising activities, and meeting expectations

  • Decision-making may be strengthened and clarified

  • Struggles to keep to time arrangements may reduce

  • Perfectionism and ideals of fixed aims may reduce

  • Developing trust in ones own judgment

  • Strong reactions to criticism may subside

  • Sudden physical and emotional changes may subside

  • Cravings to intake of particular food and drink may reduce

  • Grasping for particular things, places, or people may subside

  • Sensitivity to ones own and to others’ moods may offer fresh insights of understanding

  • Adaptability to new circumstances may strengthen

  • Emotional responses in social situations may reduce

  • Sensitivities to lights, sounds, sights, touch, or certain physical sensations may lessen

  • The need to spend time mostly indoors, or mostly outdoors in Nature may find balance

  • Exciting dreams may reduce and sleep may come more easily

  • Internal monologues may reduce and more calm arise

  • Authentic enjoyment in art, music, learning, and human connection may be found

(There can be many others that you may discover, that I would love to hear about).

Singing for Peace, Bonding & Growth – Before and After Birth

As a lifelong singer of international songs and now a facilitator of singing rooted in the wisdom of social pedagogy, I work with expectant and new families who are seeking to form a nurturing path for connection between the child and the caregiver.

Whether or not you consider yourself a singer, your voice is the most powerful and comforting sound your baby will ever hear. It carries warmth, rhythm, and presence — all of which support healthy development.

I guide parents and caregivers to learn the art of listening to our Intuition in singing, which may not have been something we learned to do in school or from our early caregivers. For this reason, I felt it important to bring this offering as a way to sing for our own health and wellbeing in relationship around the care of the child, as well as for the baby's comfort and safety.

Singing in Pregnancy – Laying the Foundations of Love

From around 18 weeks in the womb, babies begin to hear. Your voice becomes their first connection to the outer world. Singing during pregnancy:

  • Encourages bonding between you and your baby

  • Regulates your breathing and heartbeat, calming both of you

  • Begins the rhythm and melody of language development and trust

  • Introduces repetition, which helps the baby feel held in a world of order and love, which can support their ability to self-regulate as they grow and relate to others

The singing practice is a quiet but powerful beginning — an act of love that offers your baby a sense of belonging.

Singing After Birth – A Lifelong Language of Care

In the early months and years of life, babies thrive through rhythm, repetition, and emotional connection — all of which are found in singing. When you sing:

  • You create a deep sense of security and trust

  • You offer a gentle way to inspire neural and emotional development

  • You begin to establish rhythms of the day that bring harmony and rest

  • You form soulful habits of connection and calm — for both your baby and for yourself

Singing becomes a shared language between you and your child. It supports you as much as your baby — helping to regulate your nervous system and bring grounding to the intensity of early parenthood.

Songs That Carry the Wisdom of Generations

In our groups, we sing traditional UK lullabies and folk melodies that have soothed children for generations, such as:

  • "Lavender’s Blue" – poetic and calming

  • "Golden Slumbers" – a lyrical lullaby of deep rest

  • "Hush Little Baby" – rhythmic, repetitive reassurance

  • "Rock-a-bye Baby" – familiar and gently rocking

  • Good Morning Dear Earth - a song of gratitude

Singing as Social Pedagogy – Love and Freedom for All

Informed by social pedagogy, the approach places the human relationship at the heart of early care.

When a child is met with warmth, rhythm, and conscious care, they grow in confidence and inner strength.

Through music, we create a soul environment where both the adult and the child can be nourished, cultivating a deep sense of belonging, meaning, and peace.

In my singing and care groups, you’ll find a welcoming space for families of all backgrounds and beliefs. Together, we sing, breathe, share, and grow — learning how to bring peace, rest, and resilience into the daily rhythm of life with a new baby.

You don’t need to be musical — just willing to connect. Through songs, stories, and simple practices, we plant seeds of love that grow far beyond the early years.
